Can I renew an item that is already overdue?

No, overdue items cannot be renewed. However, there are some cases where your item could be eligible for automatic renewal. Below is the process.
Automatic renewals occur when both the user and the item meet specific eligibility criteria. Once the system confirms eligibility, it will renew the item for another full loan period. For example, if the original loan period is 28 days, the system will extend the due date by another 28 days for a total loan period of 112 days for 28 day loans, or 28 days for 14 day loans. Per I-Share policy, this renewal attempt happens three days before the item is due. Please note, a hold on an item will not prevent an automatic renewal.
If the automatic renewal is successful:
  • The due date will be extended.
  • The user will receive the Automatic Loans Renew Notice email, informing them of the new due date and encouraging them to return the item if they are finished with it.
If the automatic renewal is unsuccessful:
  • The due date will remain the same.
  • The user will receive the Courtesy Letter, notifying them that the item must be returned within three days to avoid becoming overdue.
To offer ECC users a similar experience when borrowing ECC-owned items, automatic renewal is now enabled for most of our physical books or media. However, there are a couple of exceptions:
  • Items with semester-long loans or 3-hour loans, including but not limited to study rooms, Chromebooks and reserves, are not eligible for automatic renewal.
  • New Books are also excluded.
Please also note: Automatic renewals do not apply to items that are already overdue nor for ILL items.
